Credit Card charges

Regardless of who the provider is, all Credit Cards come with charges as it's a necessary part of Credit Card packages. In order to make the best use of the card, understand which charges you should focus upon.

What Credit Card charges do I need to pay?

Basis the card you own and use, charges are levied.

APR

Your Credit Card agreement will determine the rate of APR. The APR is calculated as a yearly interest rate that is then applied to your outstanding balance each month.

APR can be different for different uses. Like APR for interest will vary from APR for balance transfer.

Credit Card fees (annual fees)

Credit cards usually come with an annual fee. The American Express Platinum Reserve Credit Card charges Rs. 5,000 but Cardholders enjoy a range of benefits including exclusive dining experiences, golf course entry and airport lounge access.

How to avoid additional Credit Card charges?

If used with discretion, Credit Cards are an excellent resource for financial freedom. But often people fear ending up in debt. With careful financial management one can avoid paying extra charges.

Pay your balance in full each month

Paying in full ensures that you won't have to pay interest on the money borrowed. It may not be always possible, but it's the the best way to avoid penalty. Try setting up a direct Debit to repay your Card balance in full.

Pay as much of the balance as possible

If you can't pay the full balance then try to pay as much as possible. Meeting your minimum monthly payment ensures you don't incur penalty fees, although you will still accrue interest on the remaining balance in the following month. Paying off more than the minimum each month reduces the interest you are charged.

Use electronic payments where possible

Electronic payments are very convenient, besides paying over the phone also requires one to pay additional processing charges.

Don't miss Credit Card payments

Set yourself a reminder to make your Credit Card payments every month else you are charged penalty for defaulting.

Do not exceed your Credit limit

If you spend above your credit limit, you are charged an "over-limit" fee. This can compromise your rewards and your ability to use the Card in future by affecting your Credit rating.

Use a Charge Card

If you are certain that you will always have sufficient money to repay, then a Charge Card is a useful tool to manage your finances. Charge Cards do not allow you to have credit or debt. The outstanding balance on a Charge Card is repaid, in full, at the end of every month.

Should I just choose the lowest Credit Card fee?

To find the perfect balance of charges and rewards, when choosing a Credit Card you should look at how you are going to use it and which rewards appeal to you the most. Remember, low Credit Card fees are normally reserved for introductory offers.

Credit Card limits

The maximum amount that a Credit Card issuer agrees to lend to the card holder for a period of a month is known as the credit limit of the card. Based on one's suitability and re-payment capacity, the annual limit of the card is determined. Credit Card limits are designed to make sure that you can repay the money you borrow without falling into debt.

How are Credit Card limits decided?

How are Credit Card limits decided?

Most card issuers set requirements for qualification and anyone who meets certain criteria qualifies for the card. Meeting these requirements determine the credit limit for the card.

When individuals do not qualify as per the requirements, a different card and different limit is set before issuing the cards to them.

On applying for an American Express Credit Card one is asked to provide details of KYC and income. This information is used, combined with Credit score, to determine suitability for a particular Credit Card.

How do I find out my Credit Card limit?

On completion of the contract formalities, one will find the Credit limit on the bills and communication received from American Express each month.

Can I increase the Credit Card limit?

You can ask for a review of your Credit limit and inform us about the amount you would like to raise it to. Each request is reviewed for increased Credit limit on a case by case basis. If one has a high Credit score and history of timely repayments, we may allow you to increase your limits. However, it is advisable to always spend below your Credit limit so that you can avoid negative Credit rating.

Can I apply for an unlimited Credit Card?

No-limit Credit Cards are special Credit Cards offered to individuals with exceptional Credit ratings and very high incomes. They incur interest and charges in the same way as normal Credit Cards. For most consumers unlimited Credit Cards are not offered as the risk of overspending is too high.

Can I spend more than my Card limit?

It is possible after making special arrangements with us. We usually charge a fee on overspending, which should be taken into account if you contact us to make a special arrangement.

Spending above your limit is best avoided. Overspending can negatively impact your Credit rating and may make it difficult for you to apply for a new Credit Card in the future.

Is it a bad thing to have a low Credit limit?

Credit Card limits are based on your financial position. Limits are designed to help you avoid getting into debt. By using a Credit Card frequently and making regular repayments, you help to build your Credit score. This will make it easier for you to receive higher limits on future Credit Card applications.

Credit Cards vs Charge Cards

In common parlance, we often come across terms such as Credit Cards and Charge Cards being used interchangeably, however, they are two very different things. The difference lies in the payment protocols for both. While both Credit cards and Charge cards offer a user a certain time period within which they can make the payments. In a Credit Card transaction, the user is provided with an option for minimum payment, while in a Charge Card transaction, the user is expected to pay the amount in full by the specified due date.

Let's examine the differences to understand which would be better.

How Charge Cards and Credit Cards are different?

Debit Cards, one of the most preferred options, work on the simple theory of spend as much as one has in their account, unless at times when you need to access extra cash instantly. Since most of us need the extra cash flowing in before the money actually arrives in the account, this is where the role of Credit Card and Charge Card comes to the forefront.

Our spending power can be improved by a Charge Card or a Credit Card.

Upon applying for an American Express Credit Card, one is asked to furnish details of KYC and income. This information is used, combined with Credit score, to ascertain suitability for a particular Credit Card.

What is a Credit Card?

Credit Cards let one build a "line of credit" in which the provider lends money to the user. This credit facility allows a user to make an expenditure up to an agreed credit limit and based on the balance, the user is charged interest at the end of every month.

When one borrows through a Credit Card, as per the contract one is obliged to pay back the balance amount with interest charges.

What is a Charge Card?

Charge Cards require a user to make the payment in full. If one defaults, a penalty fee is applied to the users Card account.

Though it may sound similar to a Credit Card but Charge Cards do not have interest rates. Their mechanism is based on your payment behaviour, spending patterns, and automatically keep adjusting your spending level. These are cards through which lenders offer membership rewards and exclusive benefits.

Both cards allow delayed payments and both place you in an agreement to repay. However, they are still different in a number of ways, which are as follows:

1. Interest rates

All Credit Cards charge an interest (Calculated as APR-Annual Percentage Rate) which is determined by the type of card and your CIBIL credit score.

On the contrary, in Charge Cards balance does not get carried forward month-on-month hence no interest rates are applicable. Since there is no actual credit offered, so there's no interest.

However, whether you hold a Credit or Charge Card, it is advisable to pay off the balance before it becomes due and completely avoid paying interest or charges.

2. Credit limits

Credit Cards come with spending limits. These limits are offered based on your credit rating. This is used by Card issuers as a yardstick to decide your suitability for a Credit Card. As you begin using the Credit Card, your credit score keeps improving with every spend, thus enabling you to get a higher credit limit.

Charge Cards come with no credit limits. They instead have steep penalty fees which encourages you to pay the balance amount in full each month. You can enjoy unlimited credit without charges if the balance is paid in full each month. Like Credit Cards, Charge Cards also help in increasing your credit score, if used responsibly.

3. Card balances

On Credit Cards, interest rates are applied depending on the uses of a card. For example - cash advances, balance transfer and payments for goods and services. The interest rate gets added to a Card’s outstanding balance.

On Charge Cards, the outstanding balance is paid from the bank account. Many people choose to pay Credit Card balances by direct debit so as to avoid levying of interest charges.

4. Card charges

American Express Credit Cards may or may not charge annual fees, but all Cards charge interest on balance transfers, cash advances and outstanding balances.

American Express Charge Cards offer a range of member benefits for an annual fee.

Charge or Credit Card: Which is better for me?

Both Charge and Credit Cards have their unique advantages. To decide which is better, one should carefully evaluate their spending behaviour. Always consider which Card benefits interest you the most.

How to apply for a Credit Card

Credit Cards are an essential part of our financial habits. They help us spend better and build good credit scores and sometimes we also get rewards in the form of free air tickets and hotel stays.

But before one can enjoy these benefits one has to actually apply for a Credit Card. In this guide we show you how.

Why should I apply for a Credit Card?

Firstly, you gain incredible flexibility in your spending. You can buy now and pay later, manage your finances more carefully and access emergency money at any time.

Secondly, you can build a Credit score. Using a Credit Card regularly and then repaying the balance every month will help you build a better Credit rating. This in turn makes it easier for you to secure a mortgage or larger personal loans. For most of us, buying a house is the largest life expense we will incur-so if running a Credit Card can help secure a better mortgage deal, it has to be a very good idea!

Finally, owning a Credit Card is also a great way to enjoy lifestyle perks. For example American Express Membership Reward Points can be exchanged for hotel stays, air miles and a variety of other benefits-just from using the Credit Card.

Which is the best Credit Card for me?

The best Card for you is largely dependent on how you intend to use a Credit Card.

A good place to start is with an understanding of your spending habits each month and how you will repay the balance.

Credit Cards

Credit Cards Charge monthly interest based on the APR. If you need flexibility in repayments then Credit Cards are the best option. They allow you to repay as much or as little as you want to each month. This makes them more versatile than Charge or Debit Cards.

Credit Cards also allow you to build up rewards and take advantage of additional benefits; just for using the Card.

With the American Express Gold Card you can get Reward Points for much of your regular shopping.

With the American Express Platinum Range you can enjoy travel benefits like air miles, free hotel stays and use of exclusive airport lounges.

Choose a Card based on your lifestyle habits and get the best of benefits.

Charge Cards

Charge Cards are perfect if you have cash available with which you can pay off the balance in time. The balance is paid directly from your bank account on a specific date each month-so you don't have to worry about interest Charges.

Like Credit Cards, with Charge Cards too you can gain Membership Reward Points to spend on a variety of benefits. Our Platinum Card gives bonuses in a single Charge Card.

Both Credit Cards and Charge Cards will help you build a Credit rating. Before you apply for a Card, look at the interest rates, rewards and bonuses to see what suits you the most.

Can I apply for a Credit Card?

  • You must have an Indian Credit file. You will have a Credit file if you have owned a Credit Card or Charge Card from any other provider
  • You must not have filed for bankruptcy in the past 7 years.

How does my Credit score affect my application?

Your Credit score is the Credit report provided by CIBIL.

Your history with managing credit, defaults or missed payments may influence your credit score.

Your Credit score determines the interest rates you will be offered on applying for a Credit Card. For good credit history, you receive better interest rates and higher levels of Credit spending. You can find your Credit score by visiting the CIBIL website.

Interest Rate and APR

APR and Interest Rates can be confusing. Here's a guide that will help understand how these work

What is interest?

Credit Card services allow one to borrow money and in return for the services charge a fee.

This fee is the interest rate that is applied if you don't pay the whole balance outstanding on your Card in the given month. The interest is always charged on the outstanding balance and not on the total amount.

What is APR?

APR stands for Annual Percentage Rate. It is basically the procedure through which the annual interest rate is calculated for the amount of money you pay on money borrowed. It is a useful tool if you want to compare a variety of loans-including Credit Card payments and mortgages.

Effective APR

Effective APR is the interest rate you pay coupled with annual account fees and transaction fees that are added to the balance. This is the best estimation of the total costs for a balance on your American Express Credit Cards

Fixed APR

A Fixed APR means that the Credit Card provider has to provide 45 days' notice before change of interest rate. The new interest rate will only apply for purchases after the new rate change is applied.

Variable APR

A Variable APR has flexible interest rates, based on index interest rates. This is combined with the Credit Card issuers own rates and varies based on promotional offers. It also depends on benchmark index.

APR on Credit Cards

Always check the APR to find out the interest rate. Cards with a lower APR tend to have less reward and loyalty programs but this can be a useful trade-off for some consumers.

How can I calculate the interest on a Credit Card balance?

The easiest way to calculate Credit Card interest is by using the APR. Start with comparing APR, and you'll be able to identify the best Credit Card for you. Different APRs apply to different uses such as, cash withdrawals, balance transfers and purchases. If you intend to use your Credit Card primarily for purchases, then you will want to look for the lowest APR on purchases

Sometimes, monthly or daily interest rates are also used by companies to calculate the interest on outstanding balances.

Example

  • If your Credit Card has an APR of 19% you can calculate the daily interest rate by dividing 19% by 365. This gives you a daily APR of 0.05%
  • If you had an outstanding balance of `1000 on your Card you would be charged `15.62 in interest. This is calculated as taking the APR of 0.05% times the monthly billing days (30)
  • The more of your outstanding balance you repay each month, the less interest your Credit Card will accrue

American Express Credit Card Interest Rates

American Express Credit Cards have different interest charges and transaction fees. Your Credit Card arrangement specifies the charges that apply to your purchases, balance transfers and cash withdrawals.

When you pay a part of your outstanding balance the transactions with lower interest rates are paid off first.

If you fail to make a repayment or spend more than your agreed spending limit, you will be charged a penalty interest rate .

Find out more about American Express charges and fees on Credit Cards

Do Charge Cards have Interest Rates?

Charge Cards do not have interest rates as they do not extend credit to you. The full balance on a Charge Card is taken out of your bank account at the end of each month. This means you have no outstanding balance at the beginning of the next month.

How do I get the best Credit Card interest rate?

Credit Card interest rates vary from person to person. The additional benefits and rewards you get from using a Credit Card impacts which type of Credit Card is the best for you.

If you use your Credit Card to pay for purchases and always make full monthly payments, you can focus on Membership Reward Points or travel loyalty programs. The PAYBACK and Jet Privilege Miles Credit Cards are likely to be perfect.

If you are sometimes unable to make the full payment on your Credit Card or would like to have greater flexibility with payments, then look for the lowest APR from a Card.
